Is it allowed to remove my eyebrows with laser?

Is it allowed to remove my eyebrows with laser?

The issue at hand has two aspects. The first relates to the ruling for removing the eyebrows, which is totally prohibited, and the second relates to trimming the eyebrows which can be done if certain conditions are met.

As for removing eyebrows, it was the customary practice of prostitutes in the pre-Islamic era (jahiliyya) to pluck their eyebrows or what is called in Arabic (al-nams) which means to remove her eyebrows totally which leads to the mutilation and defamation of God's creation. Therefore, the Prophet Muhammad warned Muslim women against imitating this dreadful act of defamation and mutilation of the woman’s natural beauty. The Prophet also warned that those who dare to do such an act would receive God's wrath and curse. The Prophet said, “God curses the woman who performs tattoos, gets tattoos, the woman who plucks the eyebrows of others, those women who get their eyebrows plucked, and those who part their teeth for adornment; [they are those] who change God’s creation.” Therefore this prophetic hadith explains that cursing is due to the changing of God's creation through defaming one’s face or body.

Trimming the eyebrows

Muslim scholars were divided regarding the issue of trimming eyebrows as some of them did not permit it due to the social norms that were prevailing at their time. Therefore, the juristic rulings regarding the impermissibility of trimming eyebrows were not specifically based on any legal text but rather complied with social norms of the past. That being said in our modern times the situation has changed, shaping eyebrows or trimming them is permissible as it has nothing to do with the prohibited removal of the entirety of the eyebrows as the prohibition in the above hadith specifically refers to plucking eyebrows, and it is prohibited because it is akin to mutilation, and also it is more likely to result in defaming one’s face. As opposed to this, shaping the eyebrows if they are excessively long or thinning them if they are excessively thick, is enhancing God’s creation rather than mutilating it. Its analogy, therefore, is to trimming the mustache or cutting hair, and so on, which is not only permissible but may also be recommended. In conclusion, it is permissible for women to shape their eyebrows and to remove any extra hair above and below eyebrows and to trim them in order to keep them neat and beautiful.

Based on the above and in reference to your question, it will be prohibited to use laser or any other means to completely remove your eyebrows if it leads to changing or mutilation of God's creation, and it is permitted if done for shaping the eyebrows.
