A woman taking a taxi or limousine: is it permissible?

Islam does not approve of a woman being alone with a man in a situation which may lead to something forbidden. This may happen when they are behind closed doors but does not apply to traveling by car or taxi. Therefore, she and her husband must make sure that she is safe when she uses a taxi.
What we have to understand is that there are circumstances when a woman needs to go from one place to another when her husband is not available to do this. Consider, for example, the case of a nurse whose working hours clash with those of her husband. What is she to do if the hospital does not provide her with transport? The practical thing is to make arrangements with a limousine company which employs trustworthy drivers or employ a driver. If she makes such arrangements, she is not at fault if she is sure that she will not be exposed to any kind of harassment.
And God the Almighty knows best.
