Chatting on the internet with the opposite sex, is it permissible?

Is it permissible to chat on the internet with the opposite sex?

Answer

Normally, talking to members of the opposite sex is permissible. However, the conversation may steer either toward what is reprehensible or what is forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions talked to non-mahram (person to whom marriage is permissible) women and Muslim men used to go to the Prophet’s wives and ask them about matters relating to the Prophet’s life or aspects of religion.
Talking to other people without seeing them, as happens on the Internet, is also permissible. However, such communication often leads to a degree of familiarity which could progress to intimacy. When this happens, the nature of the conversations change and develop into what may be considered forbidden. One has to be vigilant of what one says and always observe the Islamic standards of propriety.
And God the Almighty knows best.
