Fasting on 13th Dhul Hijja

Question

What is the ruling on fasting on 13th Dhul Hijja for someone who fasts 13th, 14th, and 15th of every lunar month? Kindly note that 13th Dhul Hijja is the third day of Tashreeq and that I am not a pilgrim on Hajj.

Answer

Fasting on 13th, 14th, and 15th of every month

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recommended that Muslims fast the white days, namely 13th, 14th, and 15th of every lunar month. He also recommended that Muslims fast on the day of Arafat, Ashura` along with one day before and after it, and six days of Shawwal, promising a great reward.

Fasting on 13th Dhul Hijja

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Muslims from fasting on the following days: The day of Eid al-Fitr, the day of Eid al-Adha, and the three days of Tashreeq, saying that they are days of eating and drinking.

In light of the above, it is prohibited to fast on 13th Dhul Hijja, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on that day. The fast of anyone who fasts on that day is invalid.

And Allah Almighty knows best
