A security guard missing the Friday prayer due to work obligations

Question

The inquirer works as a security guard at an institution, and the nature of his work requires him to remain at his post at all times, which forces him to miss the Friday prayer and perform the Dhuhr instead. He has tried to change his work schedule but has been unable to do so. He asks about the ruling in this matter.

Answer

It is established in Islamic jurisprudence that any valid excuse that permits missing the congregational prayer likewise permits missing the Friday prayer. These include fear of harm to oneself, to one’s property, or to those under one’s protection.

Since the inquirer is assigned to guard the institution, and the time of the Friday prayer coincides with his shift, performing it would compromise his responsibilities. In this case, the obligation to attend the Friday prayer is waived, and he may perform the Dhuhr prayer instead. It is also recommended that he request management to adjust duty schedules so that all staff have the opportunity to attend the Friday prayer.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
