Drinking Zamzam water with the intention of seeking blessings and healing

Question

There is no objection in Islamic law to drinking Zamzam water with the intention of seeking good in this world and the next. This is based on the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) who narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Zamzam water is for whatever it is intended for” (recorded by Ibn Majah

Answer

Zamzam water is blessed water through which Allah Almighty grants healing. Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated the above hadith with the additional wording, “If you drink from it seeking healing, Allah will heal you through it. And if you drink from it seeking to satisfy your hunger, Allah will satisfy your hunger through it. And if you drink it to quench your thirst, Allah will quench it for you. It is the hollow in the ground that Jibril made by striking the ground with his foot, causing water to gush out, from which Allah gave Isma’il to drink” (recorded by Al-Daraqutni and al-Hakim; al-Hakim, al-Bayhaqi, al-Mundhiri, Ibn ‘Ayiina and al-Daraqutni declared it authentic while Ibn Hajar declared it good).

Abu Dhar al-Ghafari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about Zamzam water, “It is blessed—it is food that nourishes” (recorded by Muslim). Al-Tayalisi added, “… and a cure for illness.”

And Allah Almighty knows best.
