The command to keep one’s oath and the prohibition of excessive swearing by Allah Almighty
Question
An inquirer asks, “A person frequently swears by Allah Almighty over both minor and major matters, to the point that it has become a habitual part of his speech. What is the proper religious guidance concerning this person’s behavior?”
Answer
Allah Almighty commands us to keep our oaths; He says, “And guard your oaths” (Quran, 5:89). He has also prohibited us from making them without a pressing need, out of reverence to Him. The greater a person’s veneration of Allah, the more perfect his servitude to Him. Part of perfect veneration of Allah is that His mention should be too lofty and noble for a Muslim to invoke in pursuit of worldly purposes.[1]
And Allah Almighty knows best.
