Fasting in countries where daylight hours last up to 19 hours
Question
How should fasting be observed in countries with extended daylight hours? Here in the United Kingdom, the fasting hours last approximately 19 hours.
Answer
In countries where daily fasting hours reach eighteen hours or more, the natural signs that determine the fasting period are considered irregular, and the extent of this irregularity is determined by actual conditions, as fasting continuously for eighteen continuous hours or more is physically difficult. Experts have determined that abstaining from food and drink for such an extended period can harm the body, taking into account the ordinary limits of human endurance. Islamic law would not impose a religious obligation that requires people to endure such harm.
According to the established ruling, the fasting period in such countries should correspond to those observed in Mecca, the Mother of Cities. Accordingly, Muslims residing in these areas should begin fasting at local dawn and end their fast after the same number of hours observed by Muslims in Makkah that day. Online resources can be used to check the fasting duration in Mecca. For instance, if dawn occurs at 3:00 AM locally and the fasting period in Mecca is fifteen hours, the fast would end at 6:00 PM local time.
