Taking solutions for dialysis patients, does it invalidate fasting?

Question

Taking solutions for dialysis patients, does it invalidate fasting?

Answer

Dar al- Iftaa permits patients on dialysis to take solutions during the fasting hours of Ramadan. It explained in a fatwa that dialysis does not affect a person’s fast even if the procedure involves the introduction of solutions containing nutrients. This is because a fast is only invalidated by whatever enters a body cavity through a naturally open body orifice which is not the case in dialysis. The fatwa maintained that the fast of a dialysis patient is valid by the will of God. It likewise mentioned that there is no objection in Islamic law to diabetes patients taking subcutaneous insulin injections when fasting because the injected substance reaches a body cavity through other than a usual open orifice.
