Belief in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)—the Foundation of Faith

In Islam, belief (iman) is obligatory upon every sane adult person—male or female, Arab or non-Arab—provided the call of Islam has reached them in a sound and correct manner through any means. Faith is not realized except through a firm belief in the heart—a conviction and full submission to the truth that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the Prophets, sent as guidance to the worlds. He conveyed the message in the most perfect and complete manner, and his truthfulness has been established through rational and transmitted proofs, as well as through sensory and spiritual miracles.

Muslims have no doubt that all which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) conveyed comes from Allah Almighty. The heart of the message conveyed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is the religion of Islam, the final divinely revealed message. Through Islam, Allah abrogated the previous legislations, such as Judaism and Christianity.

The path to salvation in the Hereafter lies solely through Islam. Its key is the testimony that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, belief in and submission to what the Noble Prophet brought—namely, that the Creator of the heavens and the earth is Allah, Lord of the worlds; that He alone is the One true Deity, worthy of worship, having no partner and no lord besides Him; that He is necessarily existent, possessing every perfection and exalted above all deficiencies; and that there is none comparable to Him.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was also given the Quran. We therefore believe and submit that it is the Book of Allah Almighty, revealed by Angel Jibril (peace be upon him) into the heart of the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in clear Arabic speech, as guidance for the worlds and a miracle for those who deny and oppose the message. It remains preserved, both in written pages and in the hearts of believers. Muslims worship Allah through its recitation and memorization. It has not been altered or corrupted, nor has it been subject to alteration or distortion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also brought the Sunnah, consisting of his statements, actions, and approvals. It is obligatory to act upon what has been authentically established of it, as it constitutes revelation from our Lord the Almighty.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) further brought well-known and established rulings known to all, both laypeople and scholars, such as the obligation of prayer and the prohibition of intoxicants and fornication. He also conveyed matters of the unseen related to the existence of Allah, the angels, the prophets, the Last Day, Paradise, Hellfire, and other issues categorically known as part of the religion.

This is the guidance established by the noble Book of Allah Almighty—the eternal miracle of Islam. Allah Almighty does not accept the faith of anyone except through belief in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); He says “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” (Quran, 48:29),
“Muhammad is but a Messenger; Messengers have passed away before him” (Quran, 3:144),
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets” (Quran, 33:40), and
“But no, by your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves, then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in full submission” (Quran, 4:65).

Likewise, Allah Almighty accepts no religion other than Islam, which was conveyed by His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) for He says, “Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers” (Quran, 3:85),
“Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam” (Quran, 3:19), and
“This day I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favor upon you, and chosen for you Islam as your religion” (Quran, 5:3).

Similarly, Allah Most High accepts the faith only of those who believe in what His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) has conveyed; He says, “O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day has indeed strayed far astray” (Quran, 4:136).
