In his word delivered on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, Egypt's Mufti Dr. Shawki Allam confirmed that the religion of Islam stands against all forms of economic, social, psychological and physical abuse against women.
"After the advent of Islam, women restored their rights that have been usurped during the pre-Islamic era," Dr. Allam said. He added that Egypt's Dar al-Ifta issued numerous fatwas on eliminating violence against women including prohibiting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and preventing child marriage.
It is worthy to mention that the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide has dedicated some of its last conference's themes, held in Cairo on Fatwa Renewal, to ending discrimination and violence against women within the framework of renewing religious discourse
