A man covering his wife's hajj expenses

Question

Is it obligatory for a man to cover his wife's hajj expenses?

Answer

Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam. It is obligatory upon men and women alike if they are physically and financially able to perform it. God Almighty says, "Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by people who are able to undertake it" (Quran 3: 97).

A husband and his wife are financially independent of each other; hajj is obligatory upon whoever of them is financially capable of undertaking it. The husband is not legally obliged to pay for his wife's hajj, nor is she obliged to pay for his. However, there is no objection if either of them wishes to donate its expenses to the other.

And God Almighty knows best
