Medication during fasting hours

Question

My daughter, 16 years old, has recently been diagnosed with ADHD, depression, and anxiety. She takes two medications. Should she still fast in Ramadan?

Answer

Consuming any type of oral medication, whether liquid or pills, invalidates the fast. Therefore, it is advisable to consult your daughter's physician regarding adjusting the timing of medication intake to be before Fajr or after Maghrib.

If a trustworthy Muslim physician determines that refraining from taking the medication during fasting hours would likely lead to further harm and complications, then the patient is permitted to break their fast and make up for the missed days later when the excuse ends.
