Protecting oneself from trials and temptations

Question

How can I refine and protect myself from the trials and temptations of this age?

Answer

To empower a person to stand firm against trials and temptations, and to guard against the schemes of the self and Satan, it is essential to seek to be an obedient servant of Allah, relying on Him and asking for His help in all matters. At the same time, one must never fall into arrogance, no matter how much one increases in acts of worship. Allah Almighty says, “And whoever holds firmly to Allah has [indeed] been guided to a straight path” (Quran, 3:101).

Among the ways to purify and refine the self are:

  • Making remembrance of Allah in abundance.
  • Strengthening one’s love for Allah and His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through the recitation of the Quran and sincere reflection on it.
  • Gaining a deep understanding of the religion.
  • Keeping the company of righteous and virtuous people.
  • Diligently fulfilling obligations and avoiding disobedience, particularly major sins.
  • Regular self-accountability.
  • Never losing hope in remaining steadfast on the straight path, regardless of how often one falls into sin. Instead, one should always have firm trust in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness, hasten to turn away from sins, and renew sincere repentance. Allah Almighty says, “Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do” (Quran, 29:45).

And Allah Almighty knows best.
