Paying fidya to a brother on account of breaking the fast
Question
An elderly, ill man is required to pay fidya on account of missing several fast days of Ramadan. He asks whether it is permissible to give the fidya to his 76-year-old brother who lives in a nursing home, suffers from hypertension, and needs money for medication.
Answer
It is permissible for the inquirer to give his elderly, ill brother the fidya (the monetary compensation required for not fulfilling certain religious duties) for breaking some days of fasting in Ramadan, to allow his brother to buy the medication he needs. This is permissible in Islamic law, and is considered both a form of charity and a means of maintaining family ties.
