The merit of the month of Ramadan
Question
The merit of the month of Ramadan
Answer
Allah has distinguished the month of Ramadan above all other months of the year by revealing the Quran in it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He says, “The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs of guidance and criterion” (Quran, 2:185). Allah Almighty further honored this noble month by enjoining fasting in it, saying, “So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it” (Quran, 2:185).
Fasting is an act of worship with a profound impact on both individuals and society. It trains individuals to exercise patience and endurance, softens hearts, and strengthens the bond between servants and their Lord and Creator. Fasting entails humility, obedience, and abstention from the desires and pleasures of life throughout the daylight hours, as it is observed in faith and for the sake of earning Allah’s reward. It is a triumph over the ego, whims, and Satan.
Ramadan is the month of forgiveness and emancipation from the hellfire. Allah Almighty has recorded its merit in the Noble Quran, to be recited over days and years until Allah reclaims the earth and all who are upon it. It is the only month that has been explicitly mentioned by name in the Quran.
And Allah the Almighty knows best.
