Places of prostration in Quran recitation
Question
How can one identify the places of prostrations in the Quran?
Answer
The Quranic verses that require prostration (sujud al-tilawah) are tawqifiyyah (a mandate derived solely from the instructions of Allah or the Prophet, without any human reasoning). Their places are known either through an explicit statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or through his practical example, which the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) followed. Allah Almighty has favored this Ummah by marking the places of prostration in the Noble Quran with underlines and symbols for identification.
As for identifying these places through explicit textual evidence, ʿAmr Ibn al-ʿAṣ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him fifteen verses of prostrations in the Quran: among them are three in the short chapters at the end of the Quran and two in Surat al-Hajj. This was recorded by Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and al-Daraqutni in their respective Sunan, and by al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak. Al-Hakim stated that this hadith was transmitted by Egyptian narrators, most of whom were accepted as reliable by al-Bukhari and Muslim. He also noted that there is no other narration concerning the number of prostrations in the Quran that is more comprehensive than this one, although al-Bukhari and Muslim did not include it in their hadith collections.
As for determining these places through the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), ʿAbdullah Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite to us a chapter of the Quran containing a verse of prostration; he would prostrate, and we would prostrate along with him” (recorded by al-Bukhari in Sahih).
And Allah Almighty knows best.
