The meaning of Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree)

Question

What is meant by Laylat al-Qadr, and can it be seen as some people believe?

Answer

Laylat al-Qadr signifies forgiveness, the acceptance of deeds, and emancipation from the Fire. The worship performed on this night is better than that of a thousand months. On this night, the angels descend to the earth, greeting the believing fasting servants of Allah and seeking forgiveness for them.

Due to its immense virtue and exalted status, Allah has concealed it within the last ten nights of Ramadan, so that Muslims may strive earnestly in worship to attain its blessings. Allah Almighty says, “And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months” (Quran, 97:2–3).

Laylat al-Qadr is not as some people imagine it to be. Its essence lies in striving in worship and performing righteous deeds in abundance, such as praying, seeking forgiveness, reciting the Quran, and asking Allah for mercy. This is because on this night, Allah accepts deeds that He does not accept on other nights.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
