The reason for the name ‘Muzdalifah’
Question
Among the rites of Hajj is passing through Muzdalifah, standing there, and supplicating. What is the reason for its designation as ‘Muzdalifah’?
Answer
Muzdalifah is a site in Mecca situated between Mina and ‘Arafat. It has three names: Muzdalifah, Jam ‘(gathering), and Al-Mash‘ar al-Haram (the Sacred rite).
It was named “Muzdalifah” for several reasons:
- It is said that the name derives from the root zalafa, meaning ‘to draw near,’ referring to the pilgrims approaching Mina after their departure from ‘Arafat.
- It is also said that it refers to the pilgrims gathering there.
- Another view holds that it was so named because Adam and Eve (peace be upon them) reunited there after descending to earth. [1]
And Allah Almighty knows best.
