The Prophet’s kindness toward his Companions

Question

The inquirer requests a clarification of how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) treated his Companions.

Answer

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) treated his Companions and others with the utmost mercy, compassion, and gentleness. It has not been established, for example, that he ever struck any of his Companions in aggression. Moreover, Allah Almighty described him as, “Kind and merciful to the believers” (Quran, 9:128).

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet’s servant said, “I served the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he never once said to me about something I had done, ‘Why did you do it?’ nor about something I had left undone, ‘Why did you not do it?’” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was gentle in temperament and noble in character. It was for this reason that he said, “I was sent only to perfect noble character” (recorded by al-Bayhaqi in Al-Sunan al-Kubra).

The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) embodied Allah’s command through his forbearance, gentleness, and mercy toward his Companions, as well as through his forgiveness; Allah Almighty says, “So by mercy from Allah you were gentle with them; and if you had been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So, pardon them, ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in matters. Then when you have resolved, put your trust in Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him” (Quran, 3:159).[1] A detailed discussion of the Prophet’s manners, forbearance, and patience is beyond the scope of this fatwa.

And Allah Almighty knows best
