Priority of settling a debt over performing a non-obligatory Hajj
Question
Does the settlement of a debt take precedence over performing a non-obligatory Hajj? I purchased a building from my uncle for ¤ 275, 000. I paid a deposit of 100, 000 and am currently paying 10, 000 monthly. I still owe him 115, 000. I wish to perform Hajj this year with my mother, which will cost 70, 000. Please note that I have already performed Hajj twice, once last year and once with my mother four years ago. My uncle is requesting the remaining amount and has asked me for it more than once, as he has retired and his pension is not sufficient to meet his needs.
Kindly clarify whether it is permissible for me to perform Hajj with my mother, or whether I should repay the remaining amount owed to my uncle?
Answer
Based on the above, settling the debt takes precedence over performing a non-obligatory Hajj, especially since the inquirer’s uncle—the creditor—has informed him that he needs the money.
And Allah Almighty knows best.
