Paying zakat to cover bone marrow transplants for poor patients

Question

What is the ruling on paying zakat to cover bone marrow transplants for poor patients?

Answer

Allah Almighty has specified the eight recipients of zakat, saying, “Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakat] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise” (Quran, 9:60). In other words, zakat is intended to prioritize human welfare over construction and buildings. The primary focus should therefore be on ensuring that the needs of the poor and needy are met with regard to clothing, food, housing, a livelihood, education, healthcare, and all other necessities of life, thereby fulfilling the fundamental wisdom behind zakat of which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “It is taken from their rich and given to their poor” (Bukhari and Muslim). This priority extends to providing medical treatment for those who cannot afford it and covering the cost of the medical services they require.

The ruling

It is permissible to spend zakat on bone marrow transplants as well as on the equipment and supplies used in these procedures.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
