Warning against prolonging one’s stay during a visit

Question

The inquirer inquires about the ruling of Islamic law and guidance for those who their visits to others, causing embarrassment and inconvenience to the host.

Answer

Islamic law has established that a visitor must avoid overly long visits out of consideration for their hosts who may have other important matters to attend to. Allah Almighty says, “O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth” (Quran, 33: 53).

This verse was revealed concerning some people who gathered at the Prophet’s house for the wedding banquet held for the Mother of Believers, Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her). After the meal, they lingered in conversation. Although the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) needed to attend to his family, his sense of propriety prevented him from asking them to leave. This incident demonstrates the importance of not outstaying one’s welcome or visiting too frequently.

And Allah knows best.
