The reward for those who are not skillful in the recitation of the Quran and those who do not understand its meanings

Question

What is the reward for reciting the Noble Quran when the reciter lacks sufficient knowledge of its meanings and objectives?

Answer

ʿUthman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said, “The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it” (recorded by Bukhari in his Sahih). It was also narrated by ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said, “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will have one good deed recorded for him, and each good deed is multiplied tenfold. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter; rather, Alif is one letter, Lam is one letter, and Mim is one letter” (recorded by at-Tirmidhi in his Sunan).

ʿAisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said, “The one who is proficient in reciting the Quran will be with the noble and righteous scribes, while the one who recites the Quran and stammers in it—that is, recites it with difficulty—will have two rewards, for it is difficult for him” (recorded by Muslim in his Sahih).[1]

Based on the above as well as the general implication of the Prophetic hadiths concerning the virtues of reciting the Quran, it is clear that reciting the Quran is highly meritorious and carries immense reward, whether the reciter is proficient in its recitation and knowledgeable of its meanings or not.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
