I am unable to wear the veil. Would it be permissible for me to wear a wig?

Question

I am a 30 years old girl. When I can't wear a veil, is it better to wear a wig than showing my real hair or are they both the same? Because I heard before a fatwa that wearing a wig is better than showing the real hair.

Answer

Honorable sister,

It is impermissible for you to do this unless there is a necessity and necessity is measured by its extent.

You should know that in shari'ah (Islamic law), it is permissible for a Muslim woman to wear whatever kinds if garments she likes if it meets the conditions of hijab. This means that her attire must cover her entire body except for the face and hands. The Hanafi scholars permitted Muslim women to uncover their feet. Moreover, shari'ah does not oblige Muslim women to abide by certain style of garments provided it does not incite temptation (fitna) or does not arouse the prohibited sexual desires.
