Do we know for sure how many people are going to heaven?

Question

Are there any hadiths that tell whether most people will go to heaven or hell? I think I heard about one hadith in which the Prophet told his companions that the people in heaven compared to the human race is like a white hair or a bunch of white hairs on a dark goat. Is this is a sound hadith or do we believe strictly that no one knows exactly how many will enter heaven and how many in hell?

Answer

This meaning was mentioned in the hadith narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "On the Day of Judgment, Allah the Almighty will say: O Adam! And he will respond: 'Here I am at Your service and pleasure my Lord'. Allah will call upon Adam: Allah commands you to bring forth a group from your offspring to be sent to Hellfire. Adam asks: O my Lord, who will be sent to Hellfire? Allah will say: From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine. At that point the young will turn grey, every pregnant female will abort, and the people will appear intoxicated although they are not. But the punishment of Allah is severe'. This was hard for companions to know and their faces changed [out of fear]. Thereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Be of good cheer, for there will be one man from among you and one thousand from among Ya jooj and Ma’jooj (Gog and Magog). Among the people you are like a black hair on the hide of a white bull, or like a white hair on the hide of a black bull." Then the Prophet said, "I hope that you will be one quarter of the people of Paradise, and they said, Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest! Then he said, I hope that you will be one third of the people of Paradise, and they said, Allahu Akbar! Then he said, “I hope that you will be one half of the people of Paradise.
