Are there supregatory prayers before and after the afternoon prayer?

Question

Are there supregatory prayers before and after the afternoon prayer?

Answer

Honorable brother,

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) indicated the number of sunnan regularly performed per day in his words, "Whoever performs twelve voluntarily rak'as [unit of prayer] per day, the angles will build for him a house in Paradise."

These sunnan are as follows:
- Two rak'as before fajr [morning] prayer.
- Four rak'as before zuhr [noon] prayer and two rak'as after it.
- Two rak'as after maghrib [sunset] prayer.
- Two rak'as after 'Isha' [night] prayer.

Whoever constantly performs such sunnan will obtain this reward.

As for the sunnah performed before 'Asr [afternoon] prayer, it is clarified in the words of the Prophet (pbuh), "Allah bestows His mercy on whoever performs four voluntarily rak'as before 'Asr."

In another narration, the Prophet (pbuh) said that sunnah prayer for 'Asr is two rak'as before it out of the total number of sunan along the day. He (pbuh) said: " Whoever performs twelve voluntarily rak'as [unit of prayer] per day, the angles will build for him a house in Paradise. They are: Four rak'as before zuhr and two rak'as after it, two rak'as before 'Asr, two rak'as after maghrib and two rak'as before fajr." [Al-Hakim, in Mustadrak]
