Do I gain deeds when I pet a cat at home?

A group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “O Messenger of Allah! Are we rewarded (from Allah) for treating animals kindly?”. The Prophet (pbuh) replied: “There is a reward for showing kindness to every living being.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
