Making ablution while wearing makeup

Question

Is it permissible to make ablution while wearing makeup?

Answer

Facial cosmetics are of two types:

1- A type that forms a layer that prevents water from reaching the skin, thus rendering ablution and the purificatory bath invalid. In such a case, the makeup must be removed.

2- A type that does not form a layer that prevents water from reaching the skin and is made of colors which dye the skin as henna does. This is probably the case with most types of makeup, so they do not invalidate either ablution or the purificatory bath. Imam Al-Nawawi (may God have mercy on his soul) said in Al-Majmu’ that if there is wax, dough, henna, or the like on a part of one’s body that prevents water from reaching the skin, then one’s purification is not valid regardless of the amount of these materials. However, if any trace or color of henna or of fat or oil remains on the skin such that when water reaches that part of the body it flows over it, then the purification is valid.
And God Almighty knows best.
