Is it permissible to raise one’s hands during qunut in the dawn prayer?

Question

Is it permissible to raise one’s hands during qunut in the dawn prayer?

Answer

The Shafi`is and the Malikis are of the opinion that the supplication of qunut in dawn prayer is from the Sunnah. Anas (may God be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet continued to make qunut in dawn prayers until his death.”

Raising hands during qunut is recommended by the Shafi`is who based their opinion on several pieces of evidence. Al-Imam Al-Nawawi (may God have mercy on him) said: “Is it recommended to raise one’s hands when making qunut? There are two opinions on this:

1-It is not preferable according to Shirazi. This is because supplications made during prayer do not involve raising hands such as the case of supplications made during sujud [prostrations of prayer] and tashahud [testification of faith].

2-It is preferable according to the disciples of the Shafi`is who based their opinion on the hadith recorded by Al-Baihaqi and narrated by Anas on the Quran reciters who were killed. He said: “I saw the Prophet raise his hands in every dawn prayer and invoke God to punish those who killed the reciters.” Al-Baihaqi favors this view because a number of the Prophet`s Companions raised their hands when making qunut. It was also reported on the authority of Abu-Rafi`i who said: “I prayed after Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) and he made qunut after bowing in prayer. He then raised his hands and supplicated to God aloud.” Al-Baihaqi affirmed Umar’s action. However, there is a scholarly disagreement concerning this issue, and we therefore strongly advise the inquirer not to accuse Muslims of innovation and error. In addition, it is not permissible to foment dispute between Muslims.
And God the Almighty knows best.
