Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta

A bloody discharge and fasting

Question

Is it permissible for a menopausal woman who has a bloody discharge to fast?

Answer

A bloody discharge that lasts for a complete day and night i.e. 24 hours is considered menstrual blood for a menopausal woman. On the other hand, a bloody discharge that lasts less than a complete day is not menstruation but istihada (bleeding outside the monthly period).

Istihada does not prevent a woman from praying and fasting but requires her to make ablution before each prayer.

And God Almighty knows best.
