Sacrificing an animal that was accidentally electrocuted, is this permissible?
Question
Sacrificing an animal that was accidentally electrocuted, is this permissible?
Answer
It is strongly recommended to offer a sacrifice on the day of ‘Eid. When we distribute some of its meat to the poor, relatives and friends, retaining a portion for ourselves, we earn a reward from God the Almighty.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Actions are but intentions." This means that when you intend to do something good, you are rewarded for your intentions. And when you act upon your intentions, your reward is increased. In your case, you intended to make the sacrifice, bought the sheep and brought it home, ready to make the sacrifice when it became due. The fact that it was killed makes its meat forbidden to eat and you cannot sacrifice it. However, God will reward you for your intention and for the money you spent. It is not necessary to buy another sheep, since the occasion has ended and the sacrifice is, in the first place, a recommendation and not an obligation. But if you had bought and sacrificed another sheep, you would have earned a greater reward from God though you are not blameworthy for not having done so.
It is better to wait until the next ‘Eid to sacrifice another sheep, if you so wish.
And God the Almighty knows best.
