What are the rituals of aqiqah?

Question

What are the rituals of aqiqah?

Answer

The recommend acts for welcoming a newborn in Islam include the following:
-The aqiqah: It comprises sacrificing an animal (i.e. a sheep) for the new-born any time after birth. It is recommended to offer it on the 7th, 14th or 21st day after the birth of the newborn. It is also recommended to slaughter two sheep for a male and one sheep for a female. One sheep also suffices for a male.
-Giving the adhan [call to prayer] in the newborn’s right ear and the iqama [call to commence prayer] in its left ear.
-Rubbing the child’s palate with a mashed date.
According to the opinion of some scholars, unlike the udhiya [eid al-adha sacrifice], the matter of distributing the meat of the aqiqah sacrifice is unrestricted. Ibn Sireen (may God have mercy on him) said: "Distribute the meat of aqiqah however you wish." There is no objection to distributing the meat raw or cooked.
And God the Almighty knows best.
