The condition of Prophet Muhammad in his grave

Question

Is our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) alive in his grave?

Answer

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is alive in his grave. Abu Huraira (may God be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said, "No one greets me except that God restores my soul so that I may return his greeting."

It is known that Muslims have supplicated for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in every age either in their prayers or at other times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is alive in his grave and enjoys a greater awareness and leads a better life than that of this world. For this reason, he said, “My life is good for you for you speak and I speak to you; and my death is good for you for your actions are brought before me and whatever I see of good I praise God, and whatever I see of bad I ask for God’s forgiveness on your behalf.”

The above hadiths and others indicate that God empowers and strengthens His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) with an awareness of the conditions of his community. Other Prophetic and non-Prophetic traditions demonstrate that a deceased is shown the conditions of his family; therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is closer to the believers than they are and none can restrict the will of God Almighty.

Scholarly authorships on this issue include “Ta'reef ahl al-Islam bi `anna al-Nabi salla Allahu Alayhi wa sallam la yakhlu minhu zaman wa la makan” by Imam Burhan al-Deen al-Halabi, the author of al-Sirah al-Halabiya (Insan al-'Uyun fi Sirat al-Nabi al-Ma`mun).

And God Almighty knows best.
