Making remembrance of Allah Almighty while in a state of major ritual impurity

Question

Is it permissible to engage in glorification of Allah while in a state of major ritual impurity?

Answer

It is permissible in Islamic law to glorify Allah while in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) without reciting the Quran, as Quranic recitation is not allowed while in a state of major ritual impurity.
Allah Almighty says, “O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance. And exalt Him morning and afternoon” (Quran, 33:41-42) and “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding — who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], ‘Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire’” (Quran, 3:190-191).

‘A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated in an authentic hadith, “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make remembrance of Allah at all times” (recorded by Muslim in his Sahih). Scholars have unanimously agreed on the permissibility of making remembrance of Allah in one’s heart and on one’s tongue for the ritually impure, those in a state of major ritual impurity, menstruating women, and women experiencing postnatal bleeding. As Imam al-Nawawi explains in Al-Adhkar (p. 11), this includes glorifying Allah (tasbih), declaring the Oneness of Allah (tahlil), praising Allah (tahmid), exalting Allah (takbir), sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), supplicating Allah, and the like.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
