Explanation of verse 63 of Surat al-Kahf

Question

Kindly provide an explanation of verse 63 of Surat al-Kahf.

Answer

In such matters, we should refer to the numerous books of Quranic exegesis. However, the overall meaning of the verse — and Allah knows best — is that Allah commanded His Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), the prophet of the Children of Israel, to meet one of His righteous servants, al-Khidr (peace be upon him). Allah Almighty indicated the place of their meeting by the disappearance of the fish that Moses and his young attendant had with them.

Moses and his attendant continued their journey until they reached the junction of the two seas, near the rock where they rested. They then resumed their journey for a full day and night. When hunger overtook them, Moses (peace be upon him) asked his attendant to fetch their food, which was the fish. The young man went to get it but he could not find it, as it had escaped into the sea. He then told Moses, “I forgot the fish when we were at the rock, and nothing made me forget it except Satan.” For further details, see al-Qurtubi’s exegesis, vol. 11, p. 12 and onwards.

And Allah the Almighty knows best.
