Assisting in the funeral rites of a deceased who has no means
Question
What is the ruling on assisting in the funeral rites of a deceased who has no means?
Answer
Assisting in the funeral rites of a deceased who has no wealth is considered a virtuous deed and falls within the category of ongoing charity that entails great reward and abundant merit from Allah Almighty. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gave glad tidings to those who shroud and bury the deceased, promising them a dwelling and garments of fine silk in Paradise. Abu Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“Whoever washes a Muslim and conceals what he sees, Allah will forgive him forty times. Whoever digs a grave for him and shelters him in it will be granted a dwelling as a reward, which will remain his until the Day of Resurrection. And whoever shrouds him, Allah will clothe him on the Day of Resurrection with garments of fine silk and brocade from Paradise”
(recorded by al-Bayhaqi).
Islamic law commands that we interact with others with affection, mercy, forgiveness, compassion, and cooperation. It further enjoins that the elder show kindness and compassion to the younger, the strong to the weak, and that all interactions reflect mutual assistance and strong social bonds. Allah Most High says,
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided” (Quran, 3:103) and
“And cooperate in righteousness and piety” (Quran, 5:2). Al-Nu‘man Ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“The example of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for one another is like that of a single body; if one limb suffers, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever”
(Bukhari and Muslim). In the same vein, Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“The believer to another believer is like a building, each part strengthening the other” (Bukhari and Muslim).
The benefit of cooperation is realized in facilitating endeavors, securing interests, and manifesting unity and mutual support, until it becomes a defining moral trait of the Ummah, as stated by Shaykh al-Islam al-Tahir Ibn ʿAshur in al-Tahrir wal Tanwir (6:88).
And Allah the Almighty knows best.
