The meaning of the hadith: There is no prayer for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book

Question

Does the hadith “There is no prayer for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book” apply to those praying behind an imam in the audible rak‘as? And when may he recite it?

Answer

The hadith “There is no prayer for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book” was recorded by Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, and al-Nasa`i. It applies to those not following the imam, such as the imam himself and those offering prayer individually. This is based on the report of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) who said,
“Whoever performs a rak‘ah in which he does not recite the Mother of the Quran has not prayed—unless he is praying behind an imam”
(recorded by Tirmidhi who declared it a sound hadith).

And Allah Almighty knows best.
