Recommended supplication in the event of heavy rain
Question
What supplication did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) teach for recitation during heavy rain?
Answer
When rain was pouring heavily, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite the following supplication, “O Allah, [let it rain] around us and not upon us. O Allah, [let it rain] on the hills, mountains, plains, valleys, and where the trees grow.” This is one of the supplications transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and it was recorded by Bukhari and Muslim in their Sahihs.
Shaykh al-Islam Zakariya al-Ansari notes in Minhat al-Bari bi-Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari (3:101) that Imam al-Shafiʿi, in Al-Umm, said, “If the rain becomes heavy and causes harm to the people, it is recommended to supplicate for it to stop by saying, ‘O Allah, [let it rain] around us and not upon us.’ There is no prescribed prayer for heavy rain, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform one.”
Imam al-Nawawi also mentions in Rawdat al-Talibin (2:95), “Our companions said, ‘If rain becomes heavy and damages houses and crops, it is recommended to ask Allah to cause it to cease by saying, ‘O Allah, [let it rain] around us and not upon us.’”
And Allah Almighty knows best.
