Precedence in leading the funeral prayer

Question

Who takes precedence in leading the funeral prayer—the mosque imam or the deceased’s relatives?

Answer

There is a scholarly difference of opinion regarding the order of precedence among those most entitled to lead the funeral prayer. Some hold that priority is given to the person with legal authority (dhul wilayah), such as the imam appointed by the governing authority to oversee prayer, preaching, and related duties, as this prevents conflict and discord. Others are of the view that the deceased’s family and close relatives are most entitled to lead the prayer.[1]

The view that is closest to the purpose of the funeral prayer is that the one who leads it should be the suitable guardian, provided he is qualified in terms of knowledge and righteousness; otherwise, the appointed mosque imam should lead the prayer.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
