The purpose of Quranic responses to the questions raised by polytheists

Question

The chapter of al-Baqarah and other Quranic chapters include simple questions with even simpler answers—questions posed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) by the People of the Book. Some of them embraced Islam upon hearing the answers, despite their intent to challenge and confound the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), as was their habitual treatment of the Messengers.

What is the symbolism and the miraculous nature of these answers, for example: “They ask you about the new moons. Say: They are time markers for people and for the pilgrimage” (Quran, 2: 189)?

Answer

Such questions and their answers in the Noble Quran indicate that Allah Almighty is fully aware of the malice concealed in the hearts of those who deny the truth. Through their questions, some of which they already knew the answers to and which reflected their malice and obstinacy, the polytheists sought to portray the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as weak and lacking knowledge, with the ultimate aim of challenging his prophethood and message. They asked him about wine, gambling, the soul, the new moons, Dhu al-Qarnayn, the mountains, and various other matters.

The answers themselves demonstrate that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is indeed a Messenger sent by the Lord of the worlds, supported by his Lord with conclusive proofs and decisive arguments confirming the truth of his claim to prophethood.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
