What lessons can be drawn from the commemoration of the birth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)? And how can we apply them in our lives?

The lessons to be derived from the commemoration of the birth of the Chosen Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) are too numerous to be counted. It is sufficient for us to reflect on the ones that help us endure the hardships and trials of life. Foremost among them is patience, a virtue that our Lord Almighty repeatedly impressed upon His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in many verses of the Noble Quran, and which He made one of his noble characteristics; Allah Almighty says, "And be patient, and your patience is only through Allah" (Quran, 16:127), "So be patient with gracious patience" (Quran, 70:5), and "So be patient as those Messengers of firm resolve were patient" (Quran, 46:35). Patience constitutes half of faith. For this reason, those who exercise patience will be given their reward without measure, as the Lord of the Worlds has informed us.

This blessed occasion also teaches us lessons of dignity, honor, self-esteem, courage, and magnanimity. It further teaches us to strive against one’s self (jihad al-nafs) by adorning ourselves with the noble morals and refined manners to which it calls. In doing so, we project a positive image of Islam and Muslims, and elevate our standing among the nations. Furthermore, it teaches us to defend the truth and support the oppressed. If only Muslims would heed these lessons, live by them, and unite upon them, they would benefit from the lessons embodied in the commemoration of the Noble Prophet's birth and celebrate it everywhere in a manner befitting the occasion and its honorable status.
