A father financially supporting his ill son
Question
What is the ruling on a father financially supporting his ill son? A man who has wealth that exceeds his needs has an adult son who is poor, ill, and unable to earn a living. Is the father obligated to provide financial support for his son?
Answer
We reviewed the above question, and we note that Article No. (396) of the book Al-Ahkam al-Shar’iyyah fi al-Ahwal al-Shakhsiyyah (The Rulings of Islamic Law on Matters of Personal Status) contains the following provision: “A father is obligated to financially support his adult son who is poor and unable to earn a living, whether because of chronic illness, a disability that prevents him from earning a living, or because his noble lineage prevents others from employing him. A father is likewise obligated to support his adult daughter, even if she is not chronically ill, provided that she is unmarried.”
It follows from the above that a financially comfortable father is obligated under Islamic law to support his son if the son is poor and unable to earn a living, as stated in the question.
And Allah Almighty knows best.
