Question

="text-align: left; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt" dir="rtl">We reviewed request no. 17 for the year 2011 which includes the following:
With the cooperation of some donors, an organization has purchased diabetic foot treatment equipment. This devise works by implanting stents in a patient's leg [artery], healing it after amputation was the only option.
We would like to ask whether it is permissible to purchase the stents from zakat funds. Please take into account that the beneficiaries of this treatment are from among the very poor. Before treatment begins, the organization gathers information about a beneficiary's social and financial situation.

Answer

If the case is as mentioned in the question, it is permissible to purchase the stents from zakat funds to treat poor and destitute Muslim patients who do not possess the cost of treatment. This is because it is permissible to pay zakat to treat a needy person.
