Using morphine to alleviate pain

d request no. 1151 for the year 2006 which includes the following:
What is the ruling of religion for taking morphine as an analgesic, either through injections or orally, to relieve a patient's pain? Please note that it is only given to patients who have an exigent need for it. Moreover, it is administered under a physician's supervision and the doses are adjusted to the patients' needs.

Answer


It is permissible to use morphine as an analgesic, whether through injections, orally or in any other form, to relieve the pain of patients who are in dire need for it. It must be administered under a physician's supervision and the doses must be adjusted to the patients' needs.
