Gathering to read the Qur`an on the annual anniversary of the deceased
Question
What is the ruling on gathering on the annual anniversary of the deceased to read the whole Qur`an and donate the reward to his soul? This is followed by an audible group recitation of one of the Qur`anic chapters such as al-Fatiha, Yassin, and Tabarak whose excellence was specifically mentioned in legal texts. Is this considered an innovation?
Answer
There is no legal objection to holding such a gathering nor is it a prohibited innovation provided:
· It is neither a funeral ceremony nor an occasion for extending consolations.
· It does not renew grief.
· The money used in preparing the gathering must not belong to minors.
· It must be free from ostentation.
