Is writing poetry a sin?

Question

Is writing poems considered a sinful act? I write English poems with nothing sexual or non religious. They talk mostly about life and the emotional impact of it and our relationships.
And I am in process of publishing them and someone told me that poems are not accepted in Islam. I argued because I'm a religious Muslim but I seek your saying.

Answer

This is totally erroneous. Poetry in itself is considered an expression of feelings and emotions and reflects tenderness and sensitivity. Dear brother, Islam does not suppress feelings nor does it call for suppressing graceful emotions. Poetry can be, in many cases, an influential means toward psychological and social reform. It is worthy to mention that the means take the same rulings as their objectives. Therefore, if poetry is composed with the purpose of praising Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), social reform, expresses noble feelings and true love among people and the like of good matters, it is then permissible and Allah will reward the poet. However, it is prohibited if it incites the reader to immorality or contains anything that contradicts the Islamic creed.
