Reciting the Qur`an before Friday prayer

Question

What is the ruling on having the Qur’an recited before the Friday prayer and people assembling to hear it?

Answer

It is recommended and praiseworthy for people to gather to listen to the recital of the Qur`an on Fridays in the mosque before the Friday sermon. This act involves someone physically reciting the Qur`an or listening to a recording. There is nothing wrong in this act as the Shari’ah (Islamic law) recommends it especially if the reciter is gifted with a beautiful voice and recitation. In a sound hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The one who recites the Qur`an and is gifted in it is amongst the innocent shining blessed ones, and the one who recites it and it is heavy on him i.e. it is difficult for him, earns a twofold reward.” Likewise listening to the Qur`an and paying attention to it is a legal injunction for God says, “And when the Qur`an is recited, give ear to it and pay heed, so that you may obtain mercy.” Since there is no prohibition in reciting the Qur`an during the time in question, the ruling is therefore in accordance to the original state which has been discussed, i.e. it is recommended. God is most high and all knowledgeable.
