Is it permissible to give the adhan before making ablution?

The adhan [call to prayer] is part of dhikr [making remembrance of God] and it is preferable to make ablution for any type of dhikr. However, if a person gives the adhan without having had ablution, the adhan is valid and he has not violated any Islamic rule. The adhan is not part of prayer itself, because if a person offers his prayer without giving the adhan or hearing it, his prayer is valid. He needs to make ablution for his prayer, but not for the adhan, which is the announcement that the time of prayer has arrived.
