Eating the pre-dawn meal before sleeping and not right before the dawn prayer
Question
Is it permissible for me to eat the pre-dawn meal before I sleep and not right before dawn prayer?
Answer
There is no prescribed time for suhur (the pre-dawn meal in preparation for fasting). However, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recommended that we delay this meal to just before dawn when the fast begins as this reduces the hardship that is inevitably involved in fasting. Moreover, it helps one to start one’s day in the best manner, with the dawn prayer following shortly.
Unfortunately, many people prefer to stay up late at night in Ramadan and eat suhur before they sleep which may be a couple of hours before the dawn prayer. In the majority of cases, they fail to wake up for suhur or for the dawn prayer. This is definitely wrong and they should follow the right way recommended by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And God the Almighty knows best.
